Natural finch nest in an aviary
Typical nest built without an entrance tunnel.
This nest may be effected by summer heat radiating from the roof.
May become very cold in winter if used as a roosting nest.
Some finches will make the nest touching the roof structure.
Natural nest in suburban Melbourne.
Nest comprises: Twigs from at least 5 trees or shrubs, course
grasses, fine soft grasses, lots of moss, natural hemp garden twine, gum leaves,
polythene garden twine, fine roots from plants, lengths of grass like plant
material from flowering annuals. Mud was used in the base
and the nest interior. Nest is about twice as deep as the nest photo
below.

Same property, same month, same species, different pair, as above nest but made only from assorted
green and dry twigs, tea tree
brush, course and fine grasses, lengths of grass like plant material
from flowering annuals.
Mud and mosses were not used in this nest.
Inverted "L" nest used by Gouldian and other finches.

Nestbox as used by finches is typically about 220 mm (9 inches) long x 180mm (7 inches) high x
75-100mm (3-4 inches) internally wide.
Nest box in photo has a 50mm (2 inch) wide landing platform outside the entry
hole.
Alternatively the nest box may have a piece of dowel as a perch.
Nestbox has a removable lid.
Nestbox can be attached, removed or replaced easily by the metal
bracket on the top rear of the nestbox.
Lorikeet and Lory breeders use a similar design.
Modified Standard nestbox - Left photo
- has a "porch" at the front to give the birds more privacy and
potentially less annoyance from other birds.
Typical nest box size is approx 200mm long x 150mm high x 100mm wide
(8 x 6 x 4 inches).
Nestbox has a removable lid.
Half
open finch nest with hinged lid.
Often made from chipboard/mdf, plywood or pine timber.
This nest measures about 110mm wide x 110mm deep and 160mm high
(about 4.5 x 4.5 x 6.5 inches).
Entry opening measures about 110mm wide and 45mm high (about 4.5 x
almost 2 inches)
Dimensions vary according to the size of the species.

Double finch nest with landing platform and hinged lid for
small finches.
This nest design can only be used for finches that normally nest close
together. Unsuitable for birds that are territorial.
Each nest compartment measures internally about 80mm wide x 130mm deep
and 80mm high (bit more than 3 x 5 x 3 inches)
Nestbox made from plywood and pine timber.
Dimensions can be varied according to the size of the species.

First nest from left = wicker/cane canary nest, 95mm wide x 50mm deep
(approx 4 x 2 inches).
Second nest = metal canary nest, 120mm wide x 55mm deep (approx 5 x 2.2 inches).
Third nest = wicker/cane tube finch nest, 130mm deep x 60mm entry
opening and 85mm diameter body of nest (5.2 x 2.4 x 3.4 inches).
The "tube" nest is used in a horizontal orientation.
Fourth nest = wicker/cane enclosed finch nest, 110mm high x 90mm wide
(approx 4.4 x 3.6 inches) with entry opening 55mm x 30mm (approx 2.2 x
1.2 inches).
Each of the four above nests has a wire/s attached at the back of the
nest to attach the nest to a cage or aviary fixture.
All the above nests can be used by finches, canary nests may be used by
"cup" shaped nest builders.
Enclosed nests may be used by finches that build a dome shaped nest.
